How big is the tub in your ute?

Although utes increasingly being used as family cars, what’s hanging out the back is still critical.

There’s a surprising amount of variance in the size of the tubs in Australia’s best-selling utes.

Below is a list of the dual-cab utes on sale in Australia and how their tubs stack up.

Toyota HiLux

The best-selling car in Australia has one of the longest and widest tubs on the market.

The Ford Ranger’s tub is slightly narrower than that of the HiLux, but it counters by being taller and broader between the wheel arches.

Australia’s fourth-best selling ute, the new D-Max, fits somewhere between the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux when you take a closer look at its tub.

Unsurprisingly, the D-Max and Mazda BT-50 have very similar dimensions in their tubs. The two are built by Isuzu at the same factory in Thailand.

Nissan Navara

A recent update saw the tub in the Navara grow taller, and its maximum payload increase on some models.

It’s one of the shortest tubs on the market, but counters by being wider than the the Triton, D-Max and BT-50, and Ranger.

Volkswagen Amarok

The Amarok might be getting old, but it’s still capacious behind its cabin. When it launched, Volkswagen made plenty of noise about the fact it will fit a Euro pallet between its wheel arches.
